Good overall performance in this track, with a solid vocal, succinct and
to the point chorus and theme, as well as a solid production. I thought one of
the stronger aspects of the track was the inclusion of the female background
vocal during the chorus, as it really gave the tune another color, which it
needed. Otherwise, it would have remained pretty mid-range heavy, between the
vocals, and rhythm section.
Kind of gave it a bit of a Fleetwood Mac influence, with the
Stevie Nicks harmony. I'd be aware of some of the intonation of the
longer held notes with the lead vocal, as some of it became somewhat pitchy.
Lyrics were well thought out and told the story clearly. The market for a
tune like this is a bit fuzzy, because I think it crosses so many boundaries,
roots rock, Americana, singer songwriter, but strong nonetheless.
STYLE
Roots / Americana rock with a bit of a Southern flair. Traditional singer
songwriter type vocals with female background vocal arrangement.
MELODY
Recognizable melodies within the verses with a nice melodic buildup and lift
into the chorus. Chorus melody is quite conducive to a background harmony, which
is nicely arranged and concieved with the female background, which gives it a
different sounding color to it.
STRUCTURE
Traditional verse / chorus / bridge type arrangement that works well for this
kind of Americana type style. Don't know if the guitar solo is necessary in one
of the sections, as the song is just under 4 minutes, a bit long for a single.
LYRIC
Lyrics put down a pretty succinct message about leaving a small town and
going on to a so-called bigger town and a bigger life, but, you really have
given a lot since moving on. The message is made pretty clear, which works well
for this kind of roots oriented material.
TITLE
Title reflects the overall theme of the tune, with the message coming through
in the chorus.
